Oil Paint Projects

Oil painting with background of piece being red paper.

So everything on top is the layered oil paint to create the image.

Oil painting of a pepper practicing light casting

Oil painting of shoes to represent my life style of dance

This piece is my first experiment with places and landscapes. I wanted to paint a memory in a place and with a friend that is very dear to my heart. This photograph is one of my favorites as I love culture and experiencing the natural, real life aspects of it and taking it all in! I remember walking through the cobble stones streets being in awe of the stories in each persons face and on every wall. Europe is such a historic place full of endless beauty and art. This picture encompasses it all and brings me back to that very moment!

For a long time I only painted portraits for others and for myself, so I wanted to paint something that is personal to me but that others could really find value, connection and appreciation in. After finishing this piece, I plan to do more and capture all the various places I was blessed to travel to.

Rhythm of Time

Wood, Metal, Oil Paint, Acrylic Paint, Paper collage

Size: 6 ft by 3 ft

Music has a tempo a beat that keeps the song going,

Time does the same thing, it ticks without us knowing,

Taking us on a journey to a place not yet discovered,

And gives us a chance to truly listen and find the beauty discreetly covered.

But time is a strange thing it’s beauty and its sad,

Captivating to look back on and see what lives people had,

But sad as it goes too quick and it’s out of our control,

It’s hard to take a second and be completely still without falling into the hole

It’s light for little while and each second is unique,

But then it’s dark only leaving behind shiny streaks

As time flashes by only having a moment to leave a small token

A little tiny memory before it goes on for a new decade to open!!

Memories Bring Back You

Art is my release, my form of expression,

and how I present who I am.

This is because my Gramie introduced the world of art to me at a young age. I grew up painting and sculpting with her in Florida, so this piece is inspired by, and is for her. She was my best friend and is the one who taught me how to paint and gave me the courage and skills to be who I am today. She lived her life by always finding the beauty in everything and making each moment count. She loved everything about nature, people, the arts, and took the time to enjoy the “little things”. Her hippy free spirited style breathes in me today and is apparent in so much of what I do. I chose to do this piece in honor of her as a thank you for instilling the love of self expression and art in my life and as a remembrance as it was 8 years ago this month that she passed away. She always encouraged me to pursue my talents and has been a big influence in not only art but also dance and music and is part of why these things mean so much to me, and why I am pursuing them now.  This piece is meant to represent her and her eclectic art style, and the beautiful family tree that I am apart of. She loved to mix different mediums, and often painted birch trees using lots of texture, and would sometimes include poems in her pieces.

This piece is a momento to my Gramie and a way to honor her and the impact she has had on my life.

This piece was in a show in Spark Gallery on Sante Fe in Denver Colorado for the month of February and into March.

Here is my artist statement for this piece:

It is becoming apparent as I grow older that I enjoy many of her passions and have a similar artistic style. I wanted to create a piece to honor her artistic flair and try to fully embrace it. The song I chose, Memories by Maroon 5 is one my favorites to play and sing on the guitar, and the lyrics remind me of her and the imprint she left on my heart and soul. I am fortunate that we shared so many wonderful times together. When I think about her and all our memories, I can almost feel her presence right beside me going through life.

P.S. as I was making this project, I still had a poem to write and was running out of time when I came across the poem posted by the shirt. When I went to glue a piece of paper on for my collage I found this poem I wrote last year on the back. Art was her release, as is mine, and this is another reminder that she is still helping guide me today.

Environmental Art Piece

Don't Let the Beauty Die

Medium: Dropped Canvas, Acrylic Paint, Ribbon, Gessoed lace and old cloths, found trash

Size: 5ft by 4ft

This piece was inspired by a trip to Belize where I studied leadership and sustainability. For part of the trip we spent four days on a 6 mile long island that is 100% sustainably run studying the ecosystem and the effects of climate change and human impact.

I was devastated with how much trash I saw while snorkeling and each morning lining the shore. We were four hours by boat off the coast of Belize City so we were far out into the Caribbean and we would fill bags upon bags of plastic, styrofoam, shoes, clothes, water bottles, etc. On average we would fill about 15 large garbage bags a day, it was so sad to see.

So when I came back to school I wanted to start using trash to make art as a statement. To demonstrate the beauty of our planet and the underwater life will soon be damaged and destroyed by the trash that we so carelessly are creating and dumping as if it’s not our problem anymore.

The water was so prestine and beautiful….yet every morning we’d wake up to more and more trash washing upon the shores from the middle of the Caribbean :(

I wrote a poem about the impact of plastic and waste and our everyday contributions called Plastic Cup (in my poetry section), as well as made a video demonstrating it called One Week of Trash for One Person.
